Southwold salt works #9678

Search: Google images eBay wikipedia YouTube

hollow post saltwater pump

Constructed in early 1800's, outlasted the salt works which closed in the 1890's, and remained standing through to the 1930's.

The June 1961 issue of Essex Countryside shows a photo of this wind pump by Douglas Went, but incorrectly captions it as a 1920 photo of a salt mill at Frinton, Essex.

Tuck Oilette postcard, The Old Salt-works Pump, Southwold, painted by Frank Emanuel, c1906
"No. 9. The old salt mill, Southwold. The important salt industry of Southwold came to an end in 1892, after an existence of nearly two centuries. The Salt Works and Baths have recently been pulled down, but the Mill shown in the picture is still standing", published by F. Jenkins., c1905
