hybrid wind engine, consisting of a Climax mechanism on a Duke & Ockenden tower

Signboard says:
"Dando" Wind Pump
Recovered from Copse Farm, Holmwood, near Dorking, in delapidated condition, mainly due to the 'Great Storm' of October 1987, and brought to the museum in December 1992.
It was found to have no tail fin, a gearbox beyond repair, extreme rusting of the structure and numerous other problems. Also the large adjacent water tank had proved impractical to move.
Restoration commenced and, through contacts and the Internet, a new tail fin, fan blades, a repairable gearbox and other parts were obtained.
In September 1999 it was raised and placed on its foundations in full working order.
The tower is 35 feet (10.77m) high, the fan disc 10 feet (3.07m) in diameter and the pump is capable of moving around 32 gallons (144 litres) per hour depending on wind speed. The structure was built by Duke & Ockenden around 1905 and is unusual for its fancy ironwork and the 'Eiffelated' legs of the tower. Note the bullet holes in the tail fin.
