tower mill function:Corn mill - restored, owned by the National Trust

Entry in Mills Archive database - #8791 - Bembridge Mill, Bembridge (has photos)
[English Heritage]Dating probably from the early/mid 18th century, Bembridge mill has a 38 foot stone tower, four common sails and a triangular cap. It was sketched by J M W Turner in 1795.
The mill ceased work in 1913 and became derelict. Some repairs were carried out in the 1930s after an appeal by the SPAB Windmill Section, after which it was used as a cowshed and a WWII observation post. It became a Grade I listed building and was restored and given to the National Trust in 1961, becoming a visitor attraction and the only surviving windmill on the island.
