Mills of the London Olympics

Billions of viewers watched the London Olympics opening ceremony, and one of the few constant pieces on display throughout the night was a large, rather fanciful waterwheel, which sort of linked with both the countryside theme of the opening scenes, and also the later industrial theme with "those dark satanic mill" (where yes, waterpower paid a big part in the Industrial Revolution).

That got me thinking about other "mills" associated with the Olympics venues, where I came up with the following list:

• small vertical axis wind turbines within the Olympic Park - I think these are manufactured by Quiet Revolution. These are unfortunately largely for show, rather than contributing significantly to the energy requirements of the park.
• The originally planned wind turbine was dropped a couple of years ago
• House Mill a huge historic tide mill just outside the Olympic Park on the River Lea, and open to the public
• Clock Mill another tide mill, alongside House Mill on the River Lea.
• Wimbledon Windmill, just a short distance away from the Olympic tennis at Wimbledon.
• The Royal Gunpowder Mills alongside the Olympic canoe slalom venue at the Lee Valley White Water Centre
• and slightly at a tangent, the windmill at Much Wenlock, nearby to which the Wenlock Olympian Games took place, leading eventually to the birth of the modern Olympic movement.
