MR. ROBERT BURRILL has been favoured with instructions from Mr. Henry Poate to Sell by Auction, at the Railway Hotel, Rowland's Castle, on TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 19TH, 1889, at Three o'clock in the afternoon,- The following VALUABLE PROPERTIES :-
Lot 1,-That
HISTORICAL WINDMILL,
situated on CHALTON DOWNS.
consisting of a substantially brick-built tower, patent sweeps, driving three pair of stones, and two flour dressing machines, all in excellent order; together with a good grist trade, comfortable cottage residence, stabling, stores, &c.
Lot 2,-The
STEAM MILL,
situated in the centre of the village of Clanfield, driving two pair of wheat stones, one roller mill for midlings, and all necessary dressing machinery, working automatically and driven by a ten horse-power portable engine.
The mill, machinery, and extensive stores, are all newly and substantially erected with good stabling, waggon sheds, &c. : together with the comfortably arranged dwelling house, garden, and conservatory.
The House contains entrance hall, dining and drawing rooms, seven bedrooms, kitchen, and the usual offices, the whole property covering about an acre.
The situation is remarkably healthy and dry, being on a chalk subsoil and is valuable as a residential property independent of the mill and stores.
The situation would also command a good corn, cake, manure and seed business. There is also an excellent opening for a bakery business.
The Property can be viewed by permission of Mr. Poate, who has occupied both mills and carried on a successful business for many years.

Entry in Mills Archive database - #8752 - Chalton Mill, Clanfield (has photos)
The mill was built by John Poate in 1785. It remained in the hands of the Poate family until it ceased work, some time in the late 19th century, after which it fell into disrepair. It was converted into a house in the 1970s.
