Entry in Mills Archive database - #1228 - Bidston Tower Mill, Bidston (has photos)
Built in the early 19th century to replace the post mill, and belonged to the Vyner family. It has a three story brick tower, and the cap was originally turned by a tailpole, and later by a chain wheel. In 1821 and 1839 fire destroyed the sails and internal machinery. It ceased work c 1875.
In 1894 the mill was purchased for the public by the Birkenhead Corporation, perhaps the first windmill in the country to be preserved as a historical monument.
